Călimani National Park Visitor Center

DESCRIPTION

The development of the visitor centre was completed in 2016 as part of a project funded by the German Environmental Foundation (DBU – Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt). It consists of an indoor exhibition, a shop selling local souvenirs, a gallery displaying old photographs from the local community, a film projection room, outdoor games for both children and adults, an interpretation trail in the centre’s courtyard, and another interpretation trail in the Șaru Dornei Peat Bog.

The building was originally constructed by the Administration of the Călimani National Park as part of a European-funded project.

The refurbishment works included:

  • Development of the interpretation concept and arrangement of the exhibition and outdoor spaces.
  • Installation of exhibition lighting inside the building.
  • Modifications to the heating system to accommodate the interpretive concept.
  • Fitting out the space for the souvenir shop.
  • Furnishing the exhibition (including prints on various types of media and interactive installations).
  • Construction of a wooden deck in the Șaru Dornei Peat Bog, alongside an interpretation trail.
  • Creation of an interpretation trail in the visitor centre’s courtyard, themed around the traditional cultural landscape of the Țara Dornelor region, as well as a playground.

The visitor centre is the result of two years of work by a team of 10 people, including ecotourism specialists, interpretation experts, an architect, designer, photographer, and biologists.

As a result, the Visitor Centre of Călimani National Park has become an important tourist attraction within the Țara Dornelor ecotourism destination, offering visitors at least a half-day experience upon entering its doors.
