DESCRIPTION
Located in the village of Voinești, Lerești commune, Argeș county, the Bison Visitor Centre offers visitors the chance to explore the life and history of one of Europe’s most impressive animals. After an absence of nearly two centuries from the Făgăraș Mountains, the European bison was reintroduced to the area by the Conservation Carpathia Foundation.
AER was subcontracted by the Conservation Carpathia Foundation to design and deliver the permanent exhibition at the centre, having previously developed the overall interpretive concept.
The exhibition was completed between 30 January 2024 and 31 March 2025, with a total budget of 320,033 lei (excluding VAT).
The information is presented through interactive installations — both mechanical and electronic — designed to engage audiences of all ages. Visitors can explore:
- species that have disappeared from the Făgăraș Mountains;
- where European bison can still be found in Romania and other European countries;
- an interactive station with video content on bison behaviour;
- how bison contribute to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity;
- an interactive game for children (and not only);
- a display panel highlighting the Conservation Carpathia Foundation’s conservation efforts;
- information on the global history of nature conservation.
Given the limited space — just 57 square metres — the main challenge for the expert team was to create an experience where visitors would gradually uncover the world of the bison. To achieve this, an artistic installation was placed at the centre of the room, evoking the tree trunks of a dense forest. This structure limits direct visibility of the entire exhibition from the entrance, making the climactic moment — the encounter with a life-sized bison model hidden behind the installation — a memorable surprise.
